DIY GM Ep70 Show Notes

Apr 7, 2019

This is the DIY Garden Minute by Spoken Garden!  "Teaching you tips and tricks for your Garden in one minute!"

Today's topic is How to Accurately Calculate Your Garden Material Needs!

Every season we add some mulch, compost, rock, garden soil, or other material to our garden, but how do you calculate how much of that material you will need? This is how:

  • Measure the square-feet OR square-meters/centimeters of the specific area where the new material will be used; Length times width for Area in square feet or meters.
  • Then multiply that "Area" by the depth or thickness you want the material to be.  This new number is called the "Volume"
  • Most materials, at least in the US, are sold by the cubic yard, so you need to convert your "Volume" of needed material from cubic feet or volume into cubic yards. This is done by dividing your "Volume" by 27-cubic feet to get your cubic yards. There are 27-cubic feet in 1-cubic yard.

This last number is how much material you will need to purchase and have delivered to use in your garden or yard.

Just know that each material has its own volume based on its characteristics and won't all fit the same amount into the same delivery truck because of this. Good Luck!
